April 2026

Minimum Spend Drops to $50K

Access widened. More agencies brought in. CPC bidding became the primary buying method, overtaking CPM.

May 5, 2026

Self-Serve Opens to All U.S. Businesses

ChatGPT Ads Manager (ads.openai.com) opened with no minimum spend. CPC bidding, full self-serve interface, conversion tracking available.

June 5, 2026

CPA Bidding Goes Live

Cost-per-action bidding launched in early access — meaning you can now optimize ads toward actual conversions, not just clicks.

OpenAI’s first-ever Cannes Lions appearance. Their VP of Advertising stated flatly: “We are clearly in the advertising business now.” International expansion underway including UK and Australia.

How the Ads Actually Work

When a ChatGPT user (on the Free or Go tier) asks a question relevant to your business category, your ad can appear as a sponsored result within the conversation. They see your message. They click. They land on your website. That’s it.

OpenAI has been explicit: they are not sharing conversational data with advertisers. What you’re targeting is category and intent — not the specific content of what someone typed. Think of it as the AI version of keyword targeting. You show up in the context of the conversation, not because you bought the user’s private chat history.
