This isn’t a future trend. It’s happening now. ChatGPT has 1.2 billion weekly users, according to OpenAI. Google now puts AI Overviews at the top of many results pages. And investors are using these tools to make money decisions.
This guide explains how financial advisors get found in AI search without paying for ads. It covers what the AI tools look for, what actually moves the needle, and what to ignore.
Investors Are Already Using AI to Find Advisors
The data is clear, and it’s growing fast.
- In a 2025 Wealthtender survey of 500 U.S. adults earning over $100,000 who plan to hire an advisor, 25% said they plan to use ChatGPT, Gemini, or other AI tools to start their advisor search.
- The same survey found that 96% will research an advisor online before hiring, even after a strong referral.
- Vanguard’s June 2026 survey of 6,686 of its investors found that about 32% have used AI for some form of financial guidance. Among Gen Z, millennial, and Gen X investors, the number is above 40%.
- A March 2026 Investing.com survey of 938 American investors found that 54% had used an AI chatbot like ChatGPT for investing research.
Here’s the part advisors should pay attention to. AI isn’t replacing the advisor. Vanguard found that most investors have little trust in AI guidance but high trust in human advisors. Among advised clients, 41% said AI makes them value their human advisor more. Only 2% said less.
So prospects use AI to research. Then they hire a person. Your job is to be the person AI points them to.
How AI Search Decides Who to Mention
AI tools don’t “rank” advisors the way a results page does. They build an answer from sources they trust, then cite or name the businesses that fit the question.
That sounds mysterious. It isn’t. The major platforms have said how it works.
Google AI Overviews and AI Mode. Google’s guidance is blunt: “There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary.” According to Google Search Central, a page only needs to be indexed and eligible to show in regular search with a snippet. The same SEO best practices apply.
ChatGPT search. OpenAI says websites become eligible when they allow its search crawler, OAI-SearchBot, to access the site. According to the OpenAI Help Center, ChatGPT ranks results using “multiple factors intended to help users find relevant, reliable information,” and placement is not guaranteed.
Put simply, AI search rewards the same things good SEO rewards: a site that can be crawled, content that clearly answers questions, and signals that you’re a trusted local expert.
What Actually Gets Financial Advisors Found in AI Search
There’s no secret AI trick. There’s a short list of fundamentals that most advisors haven’t finished yet.
Say exactly who you serve
AI tools match answers to specific questions. If a prospect asks, “Who’s a good fee-only advisor for business owners selling their company in Atlanta?”, the AI needs to find that exact fit somewhere on your site.
Vague messaging like “comprehensive wealth solutions for every stage of life” gives the AI nothing to match. Clear messaging gives it a reason to name you. That’s why messaging is step one in our 7-step SEO implementation order for financial advisors.
Answer real client questions on your website
Prospects ask AI full questions, not two-word keywords. We see this in our own Search Console data. Full-sentence questions like “what are the best seo agencies in woodstock, georgia?” now show up next to traditional searches.
Build pages that answer the questions your ideal clients actually ask:
- “What does a fee-only advisor cost?”
- “When should I hire a financial advisor before retirement?”
- “How do I choose an advisor for a business sale?”
Write the answer clearly in the first few sentences. Then go deeper. Add a short FAQ section to service pages.
Make sure AI tools can read your site
This is the most overlooked step. If your website blocks crawlers, hides key content inside images, or loads slowly, AI tools can’t use it.
Check three things:
- Your robots.txt file and hosting provider allow Googlebot and OAI-SearchBot.
- Your important content is written as text, not stuck inside images or PDFs.
- Your site is verified in Google Search Console so you can see indexing problems.
Own your local signals
When someone asks AI for an advisor “near me” or in a specific city, local data matters. Google’s AI guidance specifically says to keep your Business Profile up to date.
That means a complete Google Business Profile, consistent name, address, and phone number across directories, and a steady flow of reviews. This is the same work covered in step three of the implementation order. It pays off twice: once in the map results and again in AI answers.
Build proof that you’re the expert
AI tools favor sources that look reliable. For advisors, that means credentials, clear bios, client reviews where your compliance rules allow them, and mentions on trusted sites like industry directories, local media, and podcasts.
None of this is new. But in AI search, it’s the difference between being named and being skipped.
What to Ignore: AI Search Myths
The “AI SEO” industry is moving fast, and some of it is noise. Here’s what Google’s own guidance says you don’t need:
- Special AI files. Google says you don’t need to create new machine-readable files, AI text files, or markup to appear in its AI features.
- Special schema for AI. There’s “no special schema.org structured data” to add for AI features, according to Google. Standard structured data should still match what’s visible on the page.
- Guaranteed AI placement. Neither Google nor OpenAI guarantees inclusion. Anyone promising you’ll be “the answer” in ChatGPT is overselling.
If an agency pitches you “GEO” or “AEO” services, ask one question: How is this different from good SEO? If the answer doesn’t line up with Google’s and OpenAI’s published guidance, keep your wallet closed.
Organic AI Visibility vs. ChatGPT Ads
There are two ways to show up in AI tools. This post covers the first one: earning a mention through organic visibility.
The second is paying for it. ChatGPT now sells ads that appear inside conversations. We cover how that works, who sees the ads, and how to set them up in ChatGPT Ads for Financial Advisors.
Here’s the simple split. Organic AI visibility builds over time and keeps working. Ads put you in front of prospects right away but stop when you stop paying. The strongest advisors use both, with organic as the foundation.
How to Measure AI Search Traffic
You can’t improve what you can’t see. Start with what you already have:
- Google Search Console. Google says traffic from AI features is included in your Search Console Performance report under the “Web” search type.
- Google Analytics. Look for referral traffic from chatgpt.com, gemini.google.com, and perplexity.ai.
- Ask new clients. Add “How did you hear about us?” to your intake form, and include “AI tool like ChatGPT” as an option.
Track leads and booked meetings, not just visits. A handful of qualified calls from AI search is worth more than a spike in traffic. If you want to know which numbers matter most, read How to Know If Your Marketing Is Actually Working.
Where This Fits in Your Marketing
AI search doesn’t replace the fundamentals. It raises the stakes on them. Advisors with clear messaging, a strong website, and solid local signals are the ones AI tools find and recommend.
That’s how EVANCED approaches marketing for financial advisors. We treat SEO, local search, AI visibility, ads, and follow-up as one connected system, not separate projects. Most advisory firms do not have a prospecting problem. They have a positioning problem that looks like a prospecting problem.
If you are trying to figure out how to find high net worth investors, the instinct is to go looking for a better list, a better lead source, or a better ad. That instinct is expensive and it rarely works, because high-net-worth investors are not found the way ordinary leads are found. They are earned — through a narrow specialty, visible expertise, and a referral network that vouches for you before you ever get a meeting.
There is a second reason the list-buying instinct fails. Nearly every prospect you want already has an advisor. Your job is not to be discovered. It is to be the obvious better option at the moment they start looking.
The good news: the process is repeatable. Below is the framework we use with advisory firms, built around what actually moves qualified assets into the pipeline.
Frequently asked questions
Do financial advisors need a separate AI search strategy?
Not really. Google says the same SEO best practices apply to its AI features. Focus on clear messaging, helpful content, a crawlable website, and strong local signals. That covers most of what AI tools look for.
How do I know if ChatGPT is sending me traffic?
Check Google Analytics for referral traffic from chatgpt.com. Also ask new clients how they found you, and include AI tools as an answer choice.
Can I pay to show up in ChatGPT answers?
You can’t pay for organic placement in ChatGPT answers. You can run ChatGPT ads, which appear as sponsored results to some users. Organic visibility is earned through your website and reputation.
Will AI search replace financial advisors?
The research says no. Vanguard found that most investors have little trust in AI guidance and high trust in human advisors. Many say AI makes them value their advisor more.
How long does it take to show up in AI search?
It depends on your starting point. If your website and local signals are already strong, improvements can appear within a few months. If you’re starting from scratch, build the foundation first.
Be the Answer
Your prospects are asking AI who to trust with their money. The advisors who get named are the ones who’ve done the fundamentals well: clear message, useful content, a site AI can read, and a reputation that holds up.
